Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
A glorious and historic time for Wayne Gretzky, the city of Edmonton, and Oilers hopefuls everywhere, the 1983-84 NHL season would be the fourth consecutive for both the Art Ross and Hart Memorial trophies secured by Wayne. The season would also provide the very first Stanley Cup championship for the city, with the offered stick seeing important Division Finals playoff duty against the Calgary Flames, photo-matched to the pivotal Game 7. Hailing from the collection of Shawn Chaulk, the Titan TPM 2020 Ultraglass model feature’s “W. Gretzky” stamped over the upper shaft near handwritten “99”, with the original black tape over the blade and white over the handle and knob. A date stamp of “Mar 19 1984” also appears along the underside guaranteeing the vintage, with “WG-1” written in pencil near the heel. A signed LOA from Shawn Chaulk will accompany, along with a second LOA.
Exhibiting light but definite use, wear appears along the taped section of blade with a ripped tape strand at the base, with dark marks also visible over the lower shaft. A few marks and abrasions to the upper shaft are also noticeable, with what might be a few specks of red paint transfer. Originally obtained from a CNIB auction where the stick was donated by Walter Gretzky, a February 19th 2008 Edmonton Journal newspaper article photo and a January 14th 2009 Edmonton Journal newspaper article photo have been used for the photo-match, (same image - both are included and laminated), with the negatives found and dated April 22nd 1984 (Division Final Game 7 vs Calgary – Edmonton won 7-4) by the journal archive department after a request was made. The photos have been matched to the groove over the first “2” of “2020” on the front side of the shaft, and to the dark streak over the lower front side of the shaft just above the heel section.
