Jacques Plante Auction March 2006

Worn by the incomparable Bobby Hull over 20 years after he burst onto the National Hockey League scene, this heavy mesh Whalers green road jersey has an interesting story to go along with it. Everything is sewn-on in blue and white tackle twill, including “HULL” in individual letters (no nameplate). The outline of letters underneath that were removed spell out “Galarneau”. After Hull wore the sweater for some of his final nine NHL games with the Whalers, the jersey was recycled for the ’80-81 pre-season and worn by Michel Galarneau who Hartford picked 29th overall in the 1980 draft. After the pre-season was over, the Whalers’ head equipment man replaced the original Hull name on the back and gave the jersey to a friend who also worked for the team. Stall & Dean jersey has a company tag in the neck, along with a washing instructions tag, a size 50 fly tag and another small tag with “9” on it, representing the ’79-80 season. There’s a double garter-style fight strap and the green waist hem is a knit material. Nice game use includes several transfers of red paint; one through the “1” on the left sleeve, half a dozen on the left cuff, another on the front and still more on the right sleeve. A couple of black stick marks on each sleeve are also of note. Donned by hockey’s greatest left winger in the twilight of his illustrious career, this special jersey will be accompanied by letters of authenticity from Rich Ellis and the former Whalers equipment manager. *startred* During game footage from the March 12, 1980 game between the Hartford Whalers and the Detroit Red Wings. At one point in the game, you see closeups of Bobby Hull skating with his back toward the camera and it is noticeable that the back numbers are sewn onto the shirt slightly crooked and offset, matching the numbers on the jersey offered here. A DVD of the game will be included with the lot. *endred*
