Dressing as the Montreal Canadiens backup in Game 2 of the 1979 Stanley Cup finals despite not yet playing a single game in the NHL, Richard Sevigny was able to make the Habs line-up after the retiring of Ken Dryden in 1979. Backstopping the Canadiens in 11 contests his rookie season while wearing Patrick Roy’s #33, Sevigny would share the Vezina Trophy the following season with Denis Herron and Bunny Larocque. This Canadiens jersey was donned by the star netminder during his rookie campaign of 1979-80. A Maska label is situated on the collar along with dual heat-pressed logos present on the front and reverse hem, with the vintage sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 50. Styled with the iconic Habs CH team crest fully administered in layered tackle twill, “33” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with “Sevigny” across the affixed nameplate in single blue twill. The garment also sports an intact single-garter fight strap. A detailed LOA document will accompany.
Featuring a fairly clean front and with all material remaining especially supple, puck marks along with heavy red goal-post paint transfer resides on each sleeve, with a bit of minor puckering to the team crest and reverse numbers. There is also some light staining on the front band and a single team repair on the front left shoulder, with a pair of very small holes visible beneath the right sleeve’s number. A pair of images within the detailed LOA document hail from the December 31, 1979 game vs the Red Army, with one image appearing to show the nuances within the lettering on the nameplate – specifically the higher placement of the “E”, with the Maska logo on the reverse hem of the player in front of Sevigny also appearing to match. The second image shows the proper placement of the sleeves numbers as well as the team crest, with the crests placed lower on jerseys the following season (1980-81).
