Cool lot of 1970s Team Canada programs includes the 1972 Canada-Russia Series official program and a 1976 Team Canada program from Bobby Orr’s first intrasquad game signed by Rogie Vachon.
The Summit Series program from the 1972 international showdown is a complete edition. It measures 10” x 10” and features great images, many in full color, and full rosters of both Team Canada 1972 and the Soviet Union national hockey team. The front and back covers exhibit a few light stains and minor creasing that do not diminish the display of this unique international hockey program from a series that will never be replicated.
Vachon was named Team Canada’s MVP and the goalie on the 1976 Canada Cup All-Star team for his stellar play in helping lead his country to the title with a two-game win against Czechoslovakia in the final of the inaugural edition of the tournament. His vintage big, bold black ballpoint autograph is on the upper right of the four-page intrasquad game program, which measures 12” x 9”. Orr is listed on the “White” team’s roster but newspaper accounts of his first intrasquad game after joining Team Canada state he was paired with Larry Robinson and a photo in the August 20, 1976 edition of the Montreal Gazette shows Orr wearing his red No. 4 jersey seated on the bench along with fellow HOFers Bobby Clarke, Phil Esposito, and Bobby Hull. Orr contributed three assists, including one on Hull’s overtime goal to give Team Red a 5-4 win in the scrimmage at the old Montreal Forum. A note from Alan Eagleson on the back cover references an issue with programs that were sold for the previous intrasquad game on August 16 and that this program was offered on a complimentary basis. There are a few spot stains on the cover that bled through to the second page and a few creases that do not diminish the display of this unique keepsake signed by one of the biggest stars of the 1976 Canada Cup.
