Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

The task of examining and describing eleven hockey card sets is easier when most cards are in pleasing NM-or-better condition and that’s the case here. There are exceptions, notably with the 1980-81 assembly and, strangely, the ’88-89 entry, but hundreds of crisp NM-MT cards abound. All but two sets have been stored in pages/binders which can sometimes hide flaws, however stars and random pulls exhibit alluring characteristics, with of course, not-always-perfect O-Pee-Chee centering coming into play at times. An otherwise EX-MT+ Mark Messier RC has a diamond cut, with most other ’80-81s EX to NM and averaging EX+. The rookie card-laden ’81-82 set boasts NM to MINT cards (with a slight curvature), similar to two ’85-86 sets, meaning two Mario Lemieux rookies (NM+ and NM), the latter with a slight diamond cut. A couple of barely touched corners renders an ’86-87 Patrick Roy rookie NM, with rookies of Yzerman (NM-MT), Coffey, Kurri, Fuhr, Gilmour, Neely, MacInnis, Robitaille, Hull and others, as well as dozens of Gretzky cards – you remember the ‘80s - all contributing to the stash. Please see our website for more details and images of the key cards – options galore await the high bidder.
Here’s how we see the not-already-mentioned ensembles: ’82-83 (NM+ set), ’83-84 (NM set), ’84-85 thru ’87-88 = NM-MT sets or very close, with the ’88-89 representatives exhibiting more corner wear than the eight previous sets combined (Brett Hull RC is EX). A NM Joe Sakic RC (and NM set) completes the key rookie card parade. Other aspects of note are an off-centered VG-EX+ Ray Bourque RC, a crease in his second-year card, a little paper loss (back) and diamond cut to Wayne Gretzky’s second-year (#250) card, an EX Robitaille RC and over two dozen albeit lesser-condition duplicate throw-in bonuses, with a Patrick Roy rookie (VG), ’80-81 #250-Gretzky (G) and other miscellaneous rookie and second-year star cards which might yield a few pleasant surprises. Like we like to say, “numerous possibilities are offered here.”
