Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
With tea cup and saucer sets commonly an area of collecting left to general antiquing and rarely registering on the radar of sports collectors, this example is quite special. Produced for the appointment of a new guild mayor for England’s northern town of Preston in 1902, the image of the man recognized as Lord Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby and namesake and donator of the Stanley Cup is featured in portrait, with “Earl Derby” above and a Preston Guild coat of arms on the reverse along with “Sept 1902”. A “C&W Shufflebottom” stamp appears on the underside, with just light wear to the 3” tea cup including to the gilt rim, with absolutely no cracks or chips. The accompanying saucer is 5 ¾” in diameter, and features the tea cup’s matching reverse image and Shufflebottom stamp, with light wear again present and no cracks or chips.
