Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” x 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas, but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number have survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each along with an attached grommet for hanging. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. Highlighted by a desirable Jacques Plante example, we have 9 tiles from the series for your collecting pleasure, including HOFers Beliveau, Harvey and Marcel Pronovost, along with MacMillan, Hicke, Provost, Tremblay and Muzz Patrick.
Each tile remains in gorgeous original condition, with each accompanied by its original box with the players name handwritten, with the majority of the boxes showing toning/spotting.
