Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Habs netminder Bill Durnan took a well-deserved rest on the night of March 12, 1950, as the ambidextrous goalie would suit up for 64 of 70 games during that ’49-50 season, and Gerry McNeil was between the pipes when the Canadiens handed the Rangers a 5-1 trouncing at MSG. From that, the diminutive McNeil, who would ultimately become the Habs mainstay in goal for the following four seasons, was awarded the “Schaefer Award” as the most outstanding player on the ice. Offered is McNeil’s Schaefer Award mug, standing 5 ¼” high, engraved on the side as G. McN.- Schaefer Award - 3-12-50”, with the image of crossed sticks and a hand holding a beverage. This old metal mug has a glass bottom and shows a tiny dent on the rim and some very light scratching on the body, but all in all is in wonderful condition. On the bottom is marked “Britannia Metal” along with “Dunhill” and “Made in England” plus a couple of hallmarks. Also included is the original letter from the Schaefer Brewing Co., measuring 8 ½” x 11”, addressed to Gerry McNeil and informing him that he had indeed won the Schaefer Award. This typed letter is signed by Schaefer’s Director of Sportsmen’s Division, and remains in sensational condtion. And just for the fun of it, here’s the opening paragraph – “Dear Gerry, Immediately following tonight’s game, you were selected as the most outstanding player on the ice for the Montreal Canadiens and winner of the Schaefer Award. Congratulations!”
