Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

It is impossible to overstate the impact that Slap Shot has had on the game of hockey. The 1977 feature film starring the late Paul Newman is a cult classic whose numerous quotable lines are commonly used to this day throughout the game, often by those who weren’t even born when player-coach Reg Dunlop urged his fictional Charlestown Chiefs to play “Old Time Hockey” and “Let ‘Em Know You’re There!” Slap Shot was named “The Best Guy Movie of All Time” by Maxim magazine in 1998, beating out the likes of “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather”. Newman said that filming Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had making a movie.
Presumably that’s as much fun as the Hanson Brothers had playing with the toy cars they carted around on the road. “OK guys, show us what you’ve got!” With their coach finally calling on them to hit the ice, the trio of cinematic brothers launch themselves into silver screen glory on a three-minute shift that is the stuff of Don Cherry’s dreams. “What are you guys doing?” asks Dunlop. You know the answer. “Putting on the foil.” “Every game.” “Yeah, you want some?” Jeff, Steve and Jack, we can’t get enough! The film Hansons were portrayed by brothers Jeff and Steve Carlson and Dave “Killer” Hanson, who were all teammates with the likes of Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau on the very real Johnstown Jets of the North American Hockey League. The Jets were the inspiration for the screenplay written by Nancy Dowd, who was the sister of Ned Dowd, a Jets player who portrayed ultra goon Ogie Ogilthorpe in the movie.
This is a unique opportunity to obtain one, two or all three “Hanson Brothers” 1977 Slap Shot Charlestown Chiefs film-worn jerseys directly from the actors themselves. Each Chiefs blue “road” jersey is the one that was kept by its respective Hanson Brother when filming was completed. All three Hanson Brothers jerseys come with individual letters of authenticity signed by their respective actor-player. So if you want in, get me a soda, “and none of that stinkin’ root beer!”
The Hanson Brother with the right-handed shot, Jeff Hanson was portrayed in the movie Slap Shot by Jeff Carlson. Of the three real-life pro hockey-playing Carlson brothers, Jeff is probably the one who most embodied the spirit of the silver screen Hansons in his actual style of play. Jeff Carlson played a total of seven games with the WHA's Minnesota Fighting Saints in 1975-76, where he accumulated one assist and seven penalty minutes. He totaled 250 PIMs and 47 points in 64 regular season games with the Johnstown Jets of the NAHL in 1974-75, with 46 more PIMS and nine points in 14 playoff games. Like Jets teammate Dave "Killer" Hanson, who portrayed cinematice brother and linemate Jack Hanson in Slap Shot, Jeff Carlson was always ready and willing to drop the gloves and get in the middle of the mayhem. Jeff's #18 Chiefs jersey has a classic red Rawlings size 46 tag in the back of the neck. The "Charlestown All-America City" shield patch sewn on the left shoulder has some fading to the red and blue colors and some of the screening has worn off. "Chiefs" on the front and number 18 on the back and both sleeves are sewn on in yellow and white double twill. If you want to take a crack at this film classic, put on the foil when you make your bid and let 'em know you're there! Comes with Jeff Carlson's signed LOA.
