Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

This sensational and pristine vintage wool hockey sweater was worn by Hall-of-Famer Dave "Sweeney" Schriner for a World War II Kiwanis benefit game. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962, Schriner won Stanley Cups with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942 and 1945. A standout in his native Calgary, Russian-born Dave Schriner picked up the nickname "Sweeney" for his devotion to a semi-pro baseball player with that last name. The nickname stuck when Schriner began his NHL career with the New York Americans in 1934-35 as he became the third winner of the new Calder Trophy presented to the league's rookie-of-the-year. Sweeney Schriner went on to win the league scoring title each of the next two seasons and was ultimately dealt to the Maple Leafs for five players - including Busher Jackson - following the 1938-39 season. Schriner wore this incredible white wool sweater in Maple Leafs colors for a wartime benefit game in 1943. The original blue felt #11 sewn on the back is in near immaculate condition, particularly considering it's vintage, as is the blue felt Maple Leafs crest on the front with the Kiwanis logo superimposed in white felt. The sweater remains in outstanding condition, with vibrant royal blue colors in the stripes, collar and cuffs of its sleeves. This incredible piece of hockey history was originally obtained directly from the Schriner family and comes along with a letter of authenticity.
