One of the larger and more physical defenseman during the era at 6’4”, 225 pounds, Larry Robinson aggressively patrolled the Montreal Canadiens blueline for almost two decades. Beginning his career with the Habs as a Stanley Cup champion during his first season in 1972-73, Big Bird would win a pair of James Norris Trophies while also donning the maple leaf of Team Canada numerous times including at the Canada Cup. From his rookie campaign where he saw action in 36 games, we offer a photo-matched Canadiens jersey worn by Robinson during the Stanley Cup championship season of 1972-73.
A tattered and partial-detached Wilson label is affixed to the tie-neck collar (original tie-lace missing), with the vintage sweater measuring-out to size 52. Styled with the sport’s most famous team logo in layered tackle twill, “19” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the original garter-style fight strap altered to a loop-style, with reinforcing tape added. Predating nameplates, we should note that this tie-style collar was last used by the Canadiens in 1974-75. Exhibiting heavy game-use with marks to the front, team crest and sleeves, there is minimal blue and red paint transfer visible, with some minor damage to the “1” of “19” on the left sleeve. There is also pilling throughout, with a large team repair to the front (the material around the repair has been bunched-up), along with additional repairs near the team crest (1), lower reverse (1) and right sleeve (4).
An included numeric image has been matched to the particularities of the team crest, specifically the larger blue lines, with the shadow from the pull thread on the right breast and a small black mark below the team crest also showing. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany this paramount specimen donned by one of the greatest modern defenseman during his onset with the world’s most successful team.
