Taking the hockey world by storm and announcing that his presence would soon dominate, Patrick Roy rose to prominence replacing an injured Steve Penney in 1985-86, seeing action in 47 games before leading the Habs to a Stanley Cup championship while garnering the prestigious Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Originating from just his third NHL season in 1987-88, we have a pair of signed and photo-matched goal pads worn by the superstar at the 1988 All-Star Game and during the regular season (photo-matched to both), along with a blocker attributed to have been used by Roy during the era with the Canadiens. The KOHO pads feature screened and sewn-on identifiers, with "Designed and Handcrafted By" appearing in the white sewn section of each pad, with “34” handwritten on each. The Ferland blocker is in Habs colours, and shows heavy wear. Hailing from the collection of fellow Canadien and HOFer Bob Gainey, his signed LOA will accompany.
Roy has signed over the front of the left pad in black marker, adding his number and a personalization. The pads show considerable wear from game-use, with heavy rubbing to the leather in sports along with some minor staining/soiling. There is also a large leather repair on the left pad, with additional sewn repairs over the middle section of each pad. We should also note that Roy wore this same model of pads at the 1987 Canada Cup training camp/tryouts (no photo-match). The blocker shows heavy wear as mentioned, with considerable rubbing to the leather surface over the front, with the side seam separated and the interior padding exposed. Regarding the photo-matches for the pads, Getty Images #81446074 (Feb 4, 1988) has been matched to the broken reinforcement strap on the upper front left side of the right pad, the "rolled" reinforcement strap on the second from bottom left strap and to a few marks, while Getty Image #52802308 (NHL All-Star Game Feb 9, 1988) has been matched to the black mark on the "H" of "Koho" on the side of the pad, the pair of black marks to the right in the white panel and the diagonal mark above it. The interior of the left pad is photo-matched to the same image, to the black marks forming an "X" on the inside leather protection on the bottom, and to a pair of marks on the top area of the same leather protection piece. Also showing are the two large leather repair patchs. Next, Getty Image #52802335 (also from the NHL All-Star Game) has been matched to the two long loose white threads to the left center of the left pad, with the image also showing the two large leather repair patchs. Getty Image #53132274 also shows aforementioned matches for both pads. Finally, three additional numeric images are photo-matched to some of the previously mentioned black marks on the exterior side of the right leg pad.
