This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
The witnesses to the early tilts and melees that would evolve into the modern game of hockey, we have an especially interesting and historically significant vintage hockey arena postcard collection of 23, with a few additional gems included. We have postcards featuring the famous buildings of early professional hockey including the Amphidrome in Houghton (Portage Lake Hockey Team), the Coliseum in Calumet Michigan, Duquesne Garden in Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Pirates), Victoria Skating Rink (Montreal Victorias – home to the birth of organized hockey and site of first Stanley Cup matches) and Westmount Arena (Montreal Canadiens 1911-18). Other highlights include an oversized postcard of the original Montreal Forum, a 1940s snapshot photo of the later and most famous Forum, an early interior shot of Boston Garden with the Bruins on-ice, a stereoview card of the interior of the original Madison Square Gardens and an especially rare 1915 Victoria Rink Hockey Club season pass.
Also included in this rarely-seen hockey arena postcard collection, we have examples for the Chicago Coliseum (Chicago Black Hawks 1926-29), Chicago Arena, Chicago Stadium (2 different – Chicago Black Hawks 1929-1994), Olympic Arena in Lake Placid (2 – both interior and exterior views, with hockey being played, site of 1932 Olympic hockey matches), Elysium rink in Cleveland (Interior view – Cleveland Falcons 1936-37), Cleveland Arena (interior view with hockey being played – Cleveland Barons 1937-1973) and Clinton Arena (interior view with hockey teams lined up). Rounding out the lot, we have postcards for the Arena in Belleville Ontario (postmarked 1907), Memorial Rink in Maple Creek Saskatchewan, The Arena Rink in North Bay Ontario, Hockey Rink at Clarkson School of Technology (Potsdam NY), and the Littleton Hockey Rink in New Hampshire. The 1915 Victoria Rink pass hasn’t been filled out, with the spot blank for “Hockey Team”. As a wonderful accompaniment to the 1915 Victoria Rink pass, we also have a later postcard showing the interior of the Victoria Rink once converted to a parking garage (circa-1925) along with a 1914-postmarked postcard showing the Victoria Rink during the annual Montreal Winter Carnival. Condition within the collection varies, with expected toning, corner and surface wear along with postmarks and writing, with a few showing heavier wear including the oversized Montreal Forum postcard and Victoria Rink example (folded).
