Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
The long-time skipper of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Walt Alston managed an incredible 3,658 MLB games, winning 4 championships along the way including the single Fall Classic victory for Brooklyn in 1955. We have an interesting small grouping from Smokey’s personal collection, with a 1948 St Paul Saints team photo, along with three notebooks that hail from Spring Training in Vero Beach Florida, with examples for 1947, 1948 and 1949, with each containing interesting baseball content. As an added bonus, we also have a 1949 Montreal Royals team-signed ball with 21 signatures (The ball originates from another source), including Dan Bankhead, Pat McGlothin, Toby Atwell, Oscar Grimes, Tim Thompson, Charles Lare and others.
The photo is roughly 9 ¼” x 17 ½” (borders have been trimmed), and it pictures the full 1948 St. Paul Saints team including Alston, and it exhibits light wear along with toning to the reverse, but displays well. The team-signed 1949 Royals ball has a thin even layer of shellac, with the signatures displaying decently, with some lighter, some darker. Lastly, the 3 Alston notebooks are each roughly 6” x 9”, with “Alston” written on the cover of each.
