Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

Talk about hedging your bets! Capitals rookie Semyon Varlamov began wearing this photo-matched Itech mask in mid-March 2009 and kept it through the end of Washington's regular season and on into the Stanley Cup playoffs. This fantastic paint job by Gilders Design features the Capitals logo and colours on the left side and, just in case, the AHL Hershey Bears logo and colours on the right side. Matches show on 2009 action photos from the March 19 regular season game and April 18 playoff game against the Rangers, including a scratch through the silver star beneath the lower strap buckle on the right side. The other solid photo match is the paint chip between the S in "Hershey" and the A in "Bears" on the right side of the top. Straps are original and the padding is all there except for the removable forehead Velcro panel. The clear plastic neck protector Semyon wore with this gamer was removed. There is a Capitals hologram sticker on the bottom of the backplate which displays a Russian flag and the logo of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the ill-fated team that developed Varlamov. Solid photo matches and a truly inspired paint job make this a special piece for a game-worn goalie mask shrine.
