Hall of Fame center Stan Mikita was part of Team Canada's incredible depth down the middle for the legendary 1972 Canada-Russia series. Inserted into the lineup after the humiliating 7-3 loss in the series opener at the Montreal Forum, Mikita assisted on Frank Mahovlich's goal midway through the third period which salted away Team Canada's crucial 4-1 win in Game 2 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Stan also played the following game in Winnipeg but he was left out of the lineup for the final Canadian game in Vancouver. Stan was on hand for the final four games in Moscow, though he did not dress for any of them. This is an official jersey issued to Stan Mikita. Most likely an extra jersey, possibly worn during pre-tournament training camp and Red vs. White inter-squad games held at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, it was given to a famous artist by a high-ranking Team Canada executive in the 1970s. The solid red maple leaf rises up from the waist of this amazing heavy knit Team Canada uniform. Stan's familiar number "21" is sewn onto the back below "CANADA" spelled out in block letters, all sewn-on in spectacular red twill. The "Tricot Sport Maska" black and gold manufacturer's tag in the back of the neck has been cut out, leaving black remnants sewn-on on both the left and right side, the latter with a laundry instructions flag tag still attached. Another small "Made in Canada" flag tag sits to the left with fabric notations and "large" made out among the size notations. This knit jersey shows displays numerous small spot stains on the right shoulder, possibly dried blood, blue paint transfer on the left shoulder, sweat stains around the collar, which is worn and torn at the top of the front seam. There is reddish bleeding on the white front above the top edge of the sewn-on red maple leaf, which displays a couple of black marks on the front tail. The inside layer of white material was not trimmed out beneath the red maple leaf, as was frequently the case with Team Canada 1972 jerseys to make the jersey lighter. There is also some bleeding above the stitching on the top edge of the red cuffs. The back of the left sleeve has blue and red paint transfer, a couple of black marks and a light stain on the back of the elbow.
