Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
A nifty trio of sets is offered up here, with even longtime hobbyists possibly unaware of an intriguing 1989-90 O-Pee-Chee “Tembec” test set, the 132 cards printed by O-Pee-Chee on paper manufactured by the Tembec company as an experiment, with the goal to improve card stock quality and the cards intended for in-house review and not for sale. Experts believe that some 100 skip-numbered 132-card sets were done up, so prized collectibles for player/team collectors they are, with “whiter” backs differentiating them from regular ’89-90 OPC cards and the same stock indeed used for ’90-91 OPC and OPC Premier sets and onward. Joe Sakic and Brian Leetch rookie cards lead the lineup here, with all cards appearing NM-MT-or-better and constituting a very infrequent opportunity. The astute high bidder will also receive a sharp ’83-84 Vachon set, with Gretzky (NM-MT) and his Oilers teammates, as well as players from the other Canadian teams comprising the roster and NM-MT-or-better characteristics observed throughout – again, nice! Both the Walt Poddubny versions are indeed present, while over 250 Hall of Fame legends are depicted beautifully in a “Cartophilium” card set, the latter housed in a binder, with MINT examples appearing to be the norm. Endless options/possibilities/decisions are to anticipate with this inviting threesome.
