Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Yes, an exclamation point is definitely appropriate in the title here, with dozens of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey card “bricks” on the auction block. The Wayne Gretzky rookie cards are not present but all other 395 cards are, 42 times over. The original hoarder, after assembling each group, pulled the more important cards and then sealed up the rest, in a fashion popular back in the day. We haven’t busted any open, but have inspected the better “loose” cards and can tell you that a wide range of conditions is present. We spot some pleasing NM and better cards but also some low grade P-F-Gs and everything in between; VG to EX-MT. Some checklists and team checklists, (including the Oilers logo/checklist which carries value), are marked (a large majority) and some are not, although unmarked examples are at times “only” VG or lower. Other key/notable cards include legends Howe, Hull and Dryden at the end of their Hall of Fame careers, as well as Mike Bossy’s second-year card. The rookie card lineup includes Smith, Simmer, Tonelli, Semenko, Linseman, Melrose, Millen, Hanlon and (50) others – the astute winning bidder will get 42 of each! It's difficult to assign an average grade with such a mammoth amount – we’ll refrain from doing so - but it's not at the high end. Extremely large and interesting grab bag offers an abundance of possibilities and one that will have the new owner busy sifting and sorting and pricing for lengthy periods of time.
