Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Well remembered for his lethal wrist shot – arguably the best in the NHL, Joe Sakic earned his spot in the Hall of Fame posting strong numbers including six seasons of topping 100 points. Sakic would win literally ever major award throughout his career, including the Conn Smythe, Hart Memorial, Lady Byng and Lester B. Pearson. From his time with the Avalanche circa-2000, we have a team-signed helmet worn in practice by the two-time Stanley Cup champion. A CCM model in solid black with intact Xcel visor, chin strap and interior padding, “19” appears over the lower reverse, with Aves decals gracing each side. Practice-worn, the NHL decal usually over the lower right reverse is absent. Approx 25 have signed in silver marker, including Sakic, along with Roy, Bourque, Tanguay, Foote, Messier, Hejduk, Reinprecht, Dingman, coach Bob Hartley and others. Many of the signatures are worn from handling, with the Sakic, Roy and Bourque signatures displaying well. Hailing from the personal collection of an important hockey executive, his signed LOA will accompany.
We should note that Getty Image #160988475 (April 24, 2000 Aves practice) seem to exhibit matching qualities with the helmet including the angled placement of the Aves decal on the left side, the placement of the "Xcel" visor sticker and the alignment of the bolts, and the two upper bolts with the notches seemingly aligned, but the image is not definitive enough to call a photo-match. It should be further noted that with some players signing the helmet that only starting playing for the Aves in 2000-01, the helmet was likely worn in practices in both 1999-00 and 2000-01. The helmet itself shows nice wear from use, with scratches and surface abrasions visible throughout, with just a small area of soiling within the interior.
