Featuring two of the original clubs that can trace their American Hockey League roots to 1936, the Springfield Indians and Providence Reds won a combined 11 Calder Cup championships. The Indians were famously owned by Eddie Shore, with a number of legendary HOFers taking the Reds reigns including Sprague Cleghorn, Jimmy Gardiner and Bun Cook. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have five team-signed sheets including four from the AHL (1949-50, 1950-51 and 1957-58 Indians and 1960-61 Reds), along with an example from the EPHL’s 1961-62 Soo Thunderbirds. Highlights include HOFers Earl Siebert (coach of Springfield) and Eddie Giacomin, along with Cal Gardner, Bronco Horvath, Don Cherry and Phil Watson (coach of the Reds).
The breakdown for the individual items is as follows. First, the 1949-50 Indians sheet is 8 ½” x 11” and on team letterhead with 21 signing in matching black ink including Siebert (fold lines and light toning), followed by the 5 ½” x 7” card stock sheet for the 1950-51 Indians, with 18 signing in matching blue ink in two rows including Horvath (heavy creasing and light toning). Next, the 1957-58 Indians sheet is actually a program, with 18 signing the cover including Gardner (cover almost detached), with the Thunderbirds item also a program, with 10 signing on differing pages including netminder Roy Edwards, with the blue ballpoint signatures displaying well and light wear to the program. Lastly, the Reds sheet is 8 1/2" x 11" and on team letterhead, with 19 signing in ballpoint in two rows including Giacomin, with light wear to the sheet itself.
