Existing for well over a century in Quebec, Boswell Brewery first brewed its ale in 1844, and by 1870 the company was the dominant brewery in the province, with annual production of 650,000 gallons (equivalent to approx 3 million litres). This lot offers a wonderful assortment of Boswell and Labatts items totaling 15 and includes serving trays, bottle caps, playing cards, a mug, ashtray and more. First, we have 5 trays, with a differing trio from Boswell, along with an unmatched pair from Labatts, with the Labatts trays accompanied by a rare illustrated paper tray insert. Next, we have a Boswell stoneware half litre mug, a Boswell brush with illustrated wooden handle, a 1920s/30s Boswell baseball celluloid scorer (2” x 4”), a Boswell ashtray (6”), playing cards and more!
The trays include circa 1920s Boswell and Labatts litho on tin examples (13”), with wonderful polychrome graphics, with scratches and minor surface loss, with some pitting to the Labatts tray along with heavier wear along the rim. A second Boswell tray is metal with engraved graphics (12”, moderate wear), while the two remaining trays are both porcelain and hail from the 1940s, with light wear to the graphics and surface loss along the rim of the Boswell tray. The mug shows light wear, with a production flaw over the handle, with the baseball scorer and cards also showing light wear. Also included, there’s a Labatts rectangular coaster (4” x 6” with toning), 2 Boswell bottle openers and a selection of five different Boswell bottle caps, with expected wear to each.
