Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020

From the NHL’s 46th season of play, a year that featured Jean Beliveau securing his 300th career goal, we have a stick used by legendary keeper Jacques Plante, and it’s been team-signed by the 1962-63 Montreal Canadiens. A CCM Pattern Made Custom Pro model, “Plante” appears lightly stamped over the upper shaft, with the original black tape intact over the blade and paddle, and white on the knob. A wide band of white tape has been added to the paddle, with a handwritten notation and signature from Jean Beliveau stating that the stick originates from a January, 1963 contest between the Canadiens and the Rangers. 19 have signed the front side of the shaft in pencil, including Plante, along with fellow HOF members Beliveau, Richard, Blake, Moore and Tom Johnson.
The remaining signers include Provost, G. Tremblay, Rousseau, Backstrom, Marshall, Talbot, Gauthier, J.C. Tremblay (2), Fontinato and Red Berenson. The majority of the signatures are quite light/faded, with some hard to decipher, with the Plante, Beliveau, Moore and Blake fairly faded but readable. We should note that the top portion of the white tape over the paddle has been cut-away, with this most likely done to remove the name of the stick’s original recipient. Showing nice game-use, the blade appears broken beneath the tape, with some additional minor cracking near the heel section. There are also a few loose strands of blade tape, with an eyelet hook added to the top of the knob.
