Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
A multi-award winner during his time in the AHL in the 1960s, goaltender Les Binkley was not only an inaugural member of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1967, he was the very first player signed by the club. Five seasons would be spent in Pennsylvania, with later appearances in the WHA with Ottawa and Toronto. Worn during the greater part of his noteworthy career, we have the mask Binkley regularly donned with the Pens from 1970-72, with the desirable photo-matched specimen seeing later action with the Toronto Toros, from 1972-76. A scarce-style fiberglass model made by the combined forces of David Britt and Marc-Andre Beaudin and identical to the style famously worn by Tony Esposito, the original leather-buckle strapping is intact, with a wonderful original surface over both the white front and interior. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
A few marks and scrapes are visible, with the surface retaining its luster, with just a bit of chipping in spots including over the nose section. The interior also exhibits surface wear to the finish, with no cracks visible. Over 40 included numeric images show Binkley wearing this exact mask with the Penguins, along with a couple showing him with the Toronto Toros including one dated to 1975.
