Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The only player considered larger than the game itself and a “giant” on the diamond despite wearing pinstripes, Babe Ruth achieved a lofty level of status akin to sainthood within the American consciousness, with Japanese soldiers during the war uttering the biggest insult to US servicemen they could muster, yelling “To hell with Babe Ruth”. We have a desirable signed cheque from the Sultan, with this specimen encapsulated and graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. Drawn on Ruth’s New York Chemical Bank and Trust Company account, the 1941 cheque calls for $50.00 to be paid to “Cash”, with all fountain pen text written in the Bambino’s hand, including the large and gorgeous signature. Cancellation stamps are present over both the front and reverse, with absolutely no issues for the bold signature.
The cheque is approx 3” x 8 ¼”, and exhibits just regular handling wear, with a vertical fold line through the center, with this more noticeable over the reverse. We should also note some light wear to the holder itself, including a few minor scratches.
