Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
The essential accompaniment to any advanced internationally hockey collection, we have an exceedingly rare Russian broadside poster that was on-sight in Moscow during the important Canada vs Russia series in 1974, with this specimen’s status elevated by over 30 signatures from members of Team Canada. Mounted to a cardboard backing with full dimensions of approx. 29 ½” x 40” with the actual broadside poster a bit smaller, text in Cyrillic lists the dates of the matches, along with “Hockey” in large red characters, with “CCCP – Canada” along the base. The signatures all appear to be dark ballpoint, including Howe, Hull, Mahovlich, Henderson, Cheevers and others, with the majority displaying well with just minimal fading. This is the only example of this scarce poster we have ever encountered.
The broadside poster suffers from considerable wear, with heavy toning and creasing along with water damage and discolouration, with pinholes also present along with some fading to the graphics. Despite these issues, the broadside poster still presents well, and would look substantially more attractive framed. Additional signers include JC Tremblay, Andre Lacroix, Tom Webster, Brad Selwood, Ralph Backstrom, Johnny McKenzie, Pat Stapleton, Al Hamilton, Bruce MacGregor, Serge Bernier, Rejean Houle, Gilles Gratton and others, including a single Russian player who has signed within the bottom right corner.
Addendum; We have received new information from our consignor who mentions that this broadside poster hung outside the Moscow Palace of Sports while the 1974 games were being played there and that it was taken by a Canadian fan who got the team to sign it.
