Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Dozens and dozens of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey card “bricks”, enough to fill three banker boxes(!), is what awaits the high bidder here. The Wayne Gretzky rookie cards are not present in this mini mountain, but all other 395 cards are, 43 times over. The original hoarder, after assembling each group, pulled the more important cards and then sealed up the rest, in a fashion popular back in the day, hence the “brick” reference. We haven’t busted any open, but have inspected the better “loose” cards and can tell you that a wide range of conditions is present. We spot some pleasing NM and better cards but also some low grade P-F-Gs and everything in between; VG, VG+, VG-EX, EX, EX+, EX-MT – are you getting a feel? Some checklists and team checklists, (including the Oilers logo/checklist which carries value), are marked and some are not (approximately 50-50, give or take 10 each way), although unmarked examples are at times “only” VG or lower. Other key/notable cards include legends Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Ken Dryden at the end of their prolific careers, while Mike Bossy’s second-year card is also noteworthy. The rookie card lineup includes the first O-Pee-Chee cardboard appearances of Charlie Simmer, John Tonelli, Bobby Smith, Ken Linseman, Barry Melrose, Dave Semenko, Glen Hanlon, Greg Millen, Don Maloney and others – the entrepreneurial winning bidder will get 43 of each! It's difficult to assign an average grade with such an enormous amount, but it's not at the high end and likely in the VG neighborhood. In conclusion, this is one extremely large and interesting grab bag that offers an abundance of possibilities, (numerous Gretzky rookie card owners would enjoy and appreciate acquiring the rest of the ’79-80 set if they haven’t already done so) and one that will have the new owner busy sifting and sorting and pricing for lengthy periods of time.
