Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Advancing to Formula One with the McLaren team at the 1977 British Grand Prix, Gilles Villeneuve had just previously won the US and Canadian Formula Atlantic championships in 1976. We have a Goodyear podium cap awarded to the racing legend during the 1977 season while driving for Ecurie Canada at one of his Formula Atlantic wins at either Edmonton, Felicien or Quebec City. Originating from the collection of Morry Barmak, the accompanying LOA states that the podium cap was sourced from Gaeten Saint Louis, a long-time friend of Villeneuve’s who also worked with him at Garage Villeneuve in Montreal. In solid navy blue and heavily soiled, the foam interior is deteriorating, with “G.V.” noticeable, carved into the foam near the brim. A pair of photos showing Gilles wearing the cap is included (identical photos, one is 5” x 7”, with a second smaller example affixed to the LOA).
The LOA also has a miniature F1 car affixed, with an 18 ½” x 11” x 2” hinged display case to accompany.
