The first overall pick at the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, Joe Murphy was the first such NCAA player to receive the honour, with Detroit selecting the London native. Parts of just four seasons would be spent in Motor City before additional seasons spent with Edmonton, Washington, Chicago, St Louis, Boston and San Jose. We have a signed Sharks third jersey that was worn by the 1990 Stanley Cup champion in 1997-98, his first of two seasons in California. Nike and Center Ice labeling denoting a size “54” remains affixed to the collar, with Nike and NHL crests over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with an embossed and textured Sharks team crest with embroidered detailing, mesh sides that run from the bottom hem to beneath the armpit have also been utilized along with tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with “Murphy” across the nameplate in single white twill. Game-use includes a moderate burn just above the left cuff, with a pair of small holes just over the right sleeve’s number. There is also some pilling over the reverse bottom. Murphy has signed within the top of the reverse “7” in black marker, and the signature displays well. A pair of LOAs will accompany including an example from the team, along with a JSA LOA for the signature.
