Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
The oldest and arguably most famous athletic organization in Canada, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was founded in 1881, with hockey introduced in 1886, with the Montreal AAA winning Stanley Cups in 1893, 1894, 1902 and 1903. Presented, we have a wonderful keepsake of the “Winged-Wheelers”, with a turn of the century 14K gold pocket watch. At roughly 1 ¾” in diameter, the Pleiade timepiece features a gorgeous engraved MAAA logo on the outer casing, along with their Latin club motto of “Jungor Ut Implear”. Stamped "14K" along with a hallmark and "7019325 5" on the interior casing with other hand engraved annotations, "Pleiade 7569871 21 jewels adjusted" is also visible on the interior mechanism. While we’re not sure what the watch was originally produced for, we have sold similar examples for hockey including a 1902 Stanley Cup pocket watch, so these were indeed awarded for important championships/events.
We should also note that the watch is in working order, but we don't know if it keeps accurate time currently. With minimal expected wear from a century of existence, the watch remains in wonderful condition, with minor surface wear including scratches, along with some additional light wear to edges. There are also a few small blemishes to the inner bezel, most notably between the “11” and “12”.
The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association began as a confederation of three sporting clubs: The Montreal Snow Shoe Club, The Montreal Bicycle Club, and The Montreal Lacrosse Club. These founding clubs shared the club space of the Montreal Gymnasium, located at Mansfield Street and de Maisonneuve Boulevard. The MAAA also organized the famous annual Montreal Winter Carnival.
