Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Huge and historic team photo montage of the 1903-04 Montreal Wanderers is a truly rare original framed print of the soon-to-be Stanley Cup champions’ senior and intermediate hockey teams. Deceased HOFers Dicke Boon and Jack Marshall appear with their senior Wanderers teammates in the studio team photo mounted on the left side of this original studio master photograph. “Wanderers Hockey Club” is stylishly drawn in the middle of the top of the montage above a photo of team president James Strachan, one of 10 individual portrait photos displayed around the two team photos. “1903-1904 Champions Federal Amateur Hockey League” is also drawn with a flourish along the bottom. Housed in its original frame to full dimensions of 28 ½” x 37 ¼”, this framed masterpiece is worthy of display in even the most prominent world class collection.
This 113-year-old original Wanderers team photo remains an incredible and historic display piece despite some cracking to the print along the left edge and a few spots in the bottom of the frame where the image adhered to the glass and became separated from the print. Even noting these flaws, this early hockey treasure’s display of 23” x 31 ½” is not diminished when one considers its rarity and its place in the game’s history. We should also note a fair amount of wear to the frame itself is present.
Founded on December 1, 1903, the Wanderers went 6-0 to capture the FAHL title, outscoring their opponents 38-18. The new Montreal squad faced the defending Stanley Cup champion Ottawa Senators in a challenge series. After tying the so-called “Silver Seven” 5-5 in the opener, the Wanderers refused to continue the series unless the tie was replayed in Montreal. The stalemate ended in a forfeit by the Wanderers, launching a heated rivalry that would see the two team’s battle for possession of the coveted silver Cup throughout the first decade of the 20th century.
