We love vintage sports clothing, and this 1930's heavy wine-colored wool sweater from the St. George's hockey team near Newport, Rhode Island is a beauty to be sure. Manufactured by the W.H. Brine Company (with the Brine tag on the inside hem with added "Ryo Arai" in ink in the space provided for the wearer's name), this sweater that measures 24" across the chest. The front displays the white felt "SG" with crossed sticks as proof that this one was worn on the ice by a member of the school's early hockey squad. St. George's School, founded in 1896, is a private, boarding prep school and is quite similar to St. Paul’s School, attended by Hobey Baker at the turn of the century. Will certainly make a darling display!
Condition is top notch with two small holes on the front, another on the shoulder, with the odd wool snag here and there to mention. All in all a nicely preserved heavy sweater nearly 100 years old. Ryo Arai (1921-1986), a student of St. George's during the early Thirties, is an interesting character... born into a prominent Japanese-American family forced to register as enemy aliens during World War II, Ryo enlisted and would serve in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service.
