Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
From the height of the Original Six era in the glorious 1950s, we have an absolutely gorgeous Boston Bruins game-worn wool sweater that has been attributed to centerman Murray Costello. Worn in the 1954-55 NHL season, the heavy wool garment features the famous spoked-B team crest which was in it’s infancy at this time, in felt on felt construction, with the thick black “B” placed atop and appearing embossed. This same felt on felt construction has been duplicated on verso with the reverse numbers, while a lone label from Jim McCarthy Athletic Equipment sits centered on the bottom inside hem. Heavy and prolonged use is immediately apparent, with both sleeves exhibiting unrepaired holes along with additional examples on the lower front and verso. Considerable pilling to the both the surface and interior is also present, along with a single team repair visible on the lower front hem. Costello wore the #21 sweater in 1954-55, with the team changing to a twill team crest starting with the 1954-55 NHL Playoffs.
