Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
One of the first forms of protection sourced by early netminders, it has been said that Whitey Merritt of the Victoria Hockey Club of Winnipeg was the first to don the lower appendage guards, wearing a pair of white leather cricket pads. This lot contains a gorgeous and seldom seen pair of early goalie pads. At 30” in length, the pads feature chestnut-brown leather fronts, with canvas on the reverse. The upper sections just have light padding, giving away their early construction and use. The leather remains soft and supple, which is quite remarkable given their age. While most of the strapping is no longer present, the pads remain in stunning condition, perfect for display in a prominent collection.
