Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Sports imagery on household consumer items was extremely popular throughout the first half of the 20th century, leaving many ideal items prefect for collectors to display today. In this lot we have a group of 4 tins, all featuring hockey or baseball. First we have a mid-1930’s Chicago Cubs tobacco tin produced by Quebec’s own Rock City Tobacco. With a diameter of roughly 6”, the colourful 3 ¼” tin features an eagle and flag motif with “Chicago Cubs” inserted into a front banner. The tin remains in gorgeous condition, with just some light rust spotting to the lid. There is also a single dent along the bottom rim. Next we have a circa-1950s “Peanut Crunch” tin issued by Philadelphia’s E.G. Whitman & Co. Baseball imagery dominates the circular 4” tin, with an image of a player on the lid as well. With just regular handling wear along with tape residue and a few scratches, the 4 ½” high can remains in pleasing condition. We also have a children’s metal lunch box, covered with sports imagery including football, cycling and baseball, with an image of a hockey goaltender on the lid. In good condition with heavy wear along the edges of the lid, the 7 ¼” x 5 ¼” x 4” box also exhibits surface scratches along with a few random dents. Lastly, we have a circa-1960s diminutive D&R baseball glove oil tin. At just over 2” in height, the tin features a paper label with a pitcher in full release. Issued by Daignault Rolland of Montreal, there is some wear and rust along the lid, with the paper label exhibiting light staining and toning.
