Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Stanley Cup finalists in 1939, the Toronto Maple Leafs would finish the season in third, and then go on to defeat both the New York Americans and Detroit Red Wings before bowing out to the Bruins in five games. This original Molson promotional team photo pictures the Leafs on-ice, straddling the bench as Dick Irvin and Conn Smythe look on. “Expectation” appears beneath, along with “Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Team 1938-39”. A sticker from the famous Canadian brewer appears in the bottom left, with the photo mounted to firm cardboard stock. Hall of Famer’s pictured along with previously mentioned Irvin and Smythe include Apps, Broda, Horner, Drillon and Busher Jackson.
At roughly 11” x 14 ¾”, the photo exhibits a number of issues with each side “rolling” upwards, but this should be rectified when framed. There is also a pair of cracks to the surface along the middle left edge, with one appearing much larger than the other, along with toning, staining and edge/corner wear.
