Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Rare and highly desirable, early gridiron head protection doesn’t make itself available every day to collectors, especially quality examples from prominent makers. This lot contains a circa late-1920's dog ear style leather football harness manufactured by Goldsmith. A copy of a period Hibbard, Spencer; Bartlett & Co. advertisement for a similar Goldsmith helmet describes the head wear as “The favorite helmet of many colleges and universities; selected tan six-once harness leather; solid molded top, ears and back; padded with white felt; leather lined sweatband, elastic forehead adjustment”, with an original purchase price of $7.50. The Goldsmith stamp is along the back portion of the helmet along with the model “50”, and it is slightly faded but legible. The helmet displays thorough use, with the leather supple but exhibiting some wear along with some light staining and discolouration to the felt interior. The original strap is intact but broken, with a second strap that was added that appears period. There is also a “J” that was handwritten along the very top of the helmet, but it is minor and inconsequential to the display value. The copy of the aforementioned period advertisement will be included.
