Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Utilized in shinny contests during the late-19th century, this rare example was used in the on-ice game played on skates with a ball which was a precursor to ice hockey. These "bandies" were fashioned from the lower branches of willow trees which grew in a curve upwards providing the perfect shape for a one-piece stick. The shinny stick offered here dates back to just before the turn of the century and was likely used by a right-handed shooter judging by the face of the blade that has been whittled flat. Measuring just under 40 inches from top to tip, there is wear from use along the heel and underside of the blade.
