Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Factoring heavily in the third volume, this desirable "The Trail to the Stanley Cup" three-volume set was originally presented to iconic Montreal Canadiens superstar Jean Beliveau. Author Charles Coleman's complete history of hockey and Lord Stanley's trophy from 1893 to 1967 is contained within these three books, a definite prerequisite to any important hockey library. Only 1,000 copies of the special leather-bound editions of the first and second book were produced and presented to important hockey figures, while the third was limited to 1,500 copies. Jean’s personal copies are each numbered “519” (handwritten in volume II), with a “Jean Beliveau” NHL bookplate affixed within the first volume. Each is accompanied by an attractive black slip case with gilded Stanley Cup, with the set originally acquired directly from Jean with a signed LOA from the family accompanying.
The bookplate in the first volume is detached, with a bit of wear to the text over the spine. The second and third volumes both show just light handling wear, with each of the slip cases showing wear including a pair that sport splits along seams.
