The first Russian player in history to be drafted in the first round, Alexei Kovalev was also one of the first Russians to have his name engraved on Lord Stanley’s Mug. This Penguins captain’s jersey was worn by Kovalev in 2002-03, and it’s been photo-matched. With size 56 tagging in the collar including handwritten “27a”, there’s also additional NHL and KOHO patches on the bottom hem and back neckline. Fully embellished with attractive three-colour tackle twill numbers and name-on-nameplate, this garment also features penguin crests over each shoulder. Game-use includes a number of black marks on both sleeves, including a few board burns and some blue paint transfer on the right sleeve.
This jersey has been photo-matched to three different Getty images. 1) Photo-matched to Getty image 52290530 from Jan. 1st 2003 - to a number of loose threads on the Penguins patch on the left shoulder, and to loose threads on the numbers on the left sleeve. 2) Photo-matched to Getty image 1743179 from Jan.3rd 2003 - to the black mark on the Penguins crest on the right shoulder. 3) Photo-matched to Getty image 1807755 from Jan. 21st 2003 - to the long black mark on the lower left sleeve. We should also point out that the fight strap has been cut off and removed.
