A couple of cool and vintage Option C Agreements here, filled out by the Toronto Maple Leafs organization for two players agreeing to sign with the Leafs or a minor league affiliate within the following year. First is a May 8, 1947 Agreement for Donald Rope, signed by Rope, 2 witnesses, and Leafs GM and HOFer Hap Day, who has signed in clear and bold black fountain pen ink, and another for Fort William skater Arthur Jack Rose, dated November 18, 1946 and signed at the bottom by Rose, 2 witnesses, and again Leafs GM and HOFer Hap Day, who has signed in clear black fountain pen. Both documents measure 8 1/2" x 14" and remain in great condition, with Rose' having some faint creases in the top left corner. Rope’s Option C document, in very nice condition with normal folding creases, mentions payment of $100 in exchange for Rope’s agreeing to sign within the year for $5000 if he makes the Leafs, $3000 if it’s the AHL, and $2500 if he ends up in the USHL. Rope would also get $1000 upon signing a contract. Rope would never play pro but was a talented player who skated for seven seasons with the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen and represented Canada at the 1956 Olympic Games in Cortina and Squaw Valley in 1960 and in the 1962 World Championships. Our second Option C Agreement, also from the Leafs, has almost the same dollars offered to Rope, only if Rose made the Leafs it would be $4500. Rose, although never making the NHL, played some serious hockey spanning 1948 to 1969 in leagues such as the QJHL, QSHL, NOHL, AHL, IHL, and EHL.
