This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/14/2024
A native of Slovakia from the town of Stara Lubovna near the Czech/Slovak border, Marian Hossa would play junior hockey with both Dukla Trencín in his home country and the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League in North America before being drafted 12th overall by the Ottawa Senators at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Going on to an NHL career that spanned a total of 1309 games over the course of 19 years in the league, Hossa would wear the colours of Ottawa as well as Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Chicago during his time in the league, playing in five (5) NHL All-Star Games and hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. Finishing as the runner up for the Calder Memorial Trophy during his rookie season and almost always earning votes for the Selke Trophy as well as numerous nods for the Hart Memorial Trophy as well, Hossa would finish his career with 525 goals and 1134 points before a skin disorder forced him into retirement before the start of the 2017-18 season. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020, only the third Slovakian-born player to be bestowed the honour, the Blackhawks would retire Hossa’s number “81” to the rafters of the United Center on November 20th, 2022.
Taking part in one final contest that was dubbed his “farewell game” on August 18th, 2023 at Pavol Demitra Ice Stadium in Trencin, the star-studded roster included former teammates and friends from both domestic and overseas teams such as his brother, Marcel Hossa, along with Zdeno Chara, Niklas Lidstrom, Ziggy Palffy, Henrik Zetterberg, Daniel Alfredsson, Tomas Holmstrom, Dustin Byfuglien, Duncan Keith, Petr Mrazek, Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews and Martin Havlat as well as numerous others with proceeds from the event and surrounding festivities going to “HOSS Heroes”, a charity started by the two Hossa brothers that assembles charities and aims to improve the community, especially for young athletes.
Classic Auctions is honoured, to offer in collaboration with HOSS Heroes, a superb selection of game-worn and game-issued jerseys plus equipment from Hossa’s farewell contest to help benefit their mission.
Presented here, is this Team Black jersey from the contest worn by Toews. An unbranded garment that features a size “XL” fly tag affixed inside the right hip; a stamp reading “Official Jersey Hossa Good Bye Game” is heat-pressed inside the collar. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a “Hossa Good Bye Game” crest that is in the colours of red and gold and features embroidered elements throughout including his number “81”, the headdress feathers of the Chicago Blackhawks and Trencín Castle, Hossa’s number “81” has been added in red foil numbers at the bottom of the collar while the date and location of the charity match have been sublimated into the material of the jersey underneath that. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Toews’s number “19” in single layer white tackle twill numerals, “Toews” is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed twill nameplate at the top of the reverse. Featuring a fight strap on the interior and the Hossa crest that is seen on the front sublimated into the material of the jersey at the reverse neckline, accent stripes have been sublimated into both the arms as well as over the waist and display the notation “Good Bye Game” repeating throughout them while a “DOXXbet” sponsorship logo is present over the lower reverse, once again in sublimated fashion. Worn for a single contest, the jersey exhibits a small game stain on the left cuff and a paint transfer on the number “9” on the back. The jersey has been signed by Toews over the reverse number “9” with a black marker.
