Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Capturing historic images of black hockey superstar and Order of Canada recipient Herb Carnegie, we have a wonderful collection of photos totaling nine, with each hailing from his direct family. Focusing on his time with the Perron Flyers in 1940 (four photos), the Timmins Buffalo Ankerites in 1940-41 (one framed team photo), the Shawinigan Cataracts in 1944-45 (one photo) and the Sherbrooke Randies in 1945-46 (three photos including oversized example), highlights include the framed Ankerites photo, with the team noteworthy for the all-black “Black Aces” line of Carnegie along with his brother Ossie and Vincent Churchill (Manny) McIntyre. Also included within the four Flyers photos are a pair of postcards, with one signed by Carnegie, the other, Ossie. An LOA from the Carnegie family will accompany.
The Ankerites photo is approx 5 ½” x 9” and affixed to a studio matte, framed to full dimensions of 9 ½” x 13 ½”. The Perron Flyers photos (two 3 ½” x 5” photos and two standard-size postcards) include a shot with teammates Ron Nelson, Swede Paulson, brother Ossie and Jack Douglas, with the second photo showing Carnegie with his brother. The postcards as mentioned include one of Carnegie, signed over the reverse and dated “1940”, with the other his brother, also similarly signed and dated. Moderate wear is present on each, with some glue residue over each corner on the Carnegie postcard. Next, the Cataracts photo is 8” x 10” and pictures Carnegie with his brother, with some creasing, corner wear, toning and light staining over the reverse. Lastly, the Randies photos include an oversized 10” x 14” shot of Herb on-ice, with heavy wear including a large crease and glue/paper residue over the entire reverse. The remaining two photos are both 8” x 10” and show heavy wear including creasing, with one picturing just Herb (affixed to a scrapbook page), the other, Herb and his linemates.
