Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Fascinating piece of early American hockey history is George Owen’s 1923-24 USAHA Boston Hockey Club Waltham 14-karat gold pocket watch. Owen, who died in 1986, played in the NHL for the Boston Bruins from 1928-29 to 1932-33. He was a member of the inaugural class of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973 and was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. “Boston Hockey Club, 1924, George Owen, Defense” is engraved at the interior cover of this Waltham “Royal” pocket watch, which is housed in a Wadsworth 14K gold case. The 17-jewel watch adjusted to three positions measures 1 3/4" in diameter and is in working condition, though we do not know if it keeps accurate time.
The watch case displays elaborate details that remain well defined with little to no apparent smoothing despite the obvious proud handling that shows in the numerous surface scratches on the rear cover. The crack-free crystal has a small scuff and “14K” is stamped inside the rear cover along with “Pat’s Pend’g 1111844”, which has a maintenance number notation etched alongside.
The Boston Hockey Club was a senior amateur team that played in the United States Amateur Hockey Association (USAHA) for three seasons from 1922-23 to 1924-25. They were the Eastern Division regular season champions in 1923-24, losing the championship to the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets.
