The 1973-74 Philadelphia Flyers became the first expansion team subsequent to the Original Six era to claim Lord Stanley's prized silver chalice. This amazing gold and diamonds ring was presented to veteran Flyers defenceman Ed Van Impe to commemorate the Broad Street Bullies' first Stanley Cup title after Philadelphia beat the Boston Bruins in a hard-fought final in the spring of 1974. After claiming the West Division crown with a 112-point regular season, Philly swept the Atlanta Flames in four straight games but needed all seven games to edge the New York Rangers and advance to the final against Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and the Big, Bad Bruins. Bobby Clarke scored his second goal of Game 2 in overtime to give Philadelphia a key road victory at the old Boston Garden. Conn Smythe Trophy winner Bernie Parent allowed only three goals in the Flyers' three wins on Spectrum ice, capping things off with a magical 1-0 shutout in the Cup-clincher that touched off a spectacular celebration. Van Impe's diamond and gold keepsake features a huge diamond incorporated into the Flyers logo in raised gold set in a black stone. The tableau is surrounded by "Stanley Cup and "Champions" in raised gold letters which are separated on either end by two smaller diamonds. The right shank features "Van Impe" in raised gold across the top and his number "2" at the bottom. A raised image of the Clarence Campbell Bowl sits in the middle flanked by "West Div." and "Champions" either side. The team's "50-16-12" record originally displayed along the bottom has been worn smooth and is no longer legible. "Philadelphia Flyers 1974" is displayed in raised gold atop a raised image of the Stanley Cup above the NHL shield on the left shank. The ring weighs about 37 grams with "Balfour 14K" stamped and Van Impe's facsimile signature engraved inside the size 12 band. Proud wear includes two chips in the black stone on the tableau, one at noon and the other at 9 o'clock, as well as a couple of nicks on the bottom edge of the band at the right shank and various scratches and scuffs, none of which diminish this historic championship ring's magnificent display. A very rare offering, this first Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup ring comes with Ed Van Impe's signed letter of authenticity.
