Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
A product of both the Windsor Spitfires and Hull Festivals who would be drafted by both the NHL's Chicago Black Hawks and WHA's Quebec Nordiques in 1975, Ted Bulley would go on to play a total of 414 games during his National Hockey League career, wearing the colours of Chicago as well as Washington and Pittsburgh over a total of eight (8) years in the league. Offered here and hailing from a season in which he registered 34 points in 68 games played, is this Chicago Black Hawks jersey donned by Bulley during the 1980-81 campaign. Made by Coane of Philadelphia and featuring a tattered brand tag that displays part of a size designation as well that starts with a "5", the Gunzo's tag once affixed above has been lost to time and the jersey measures out to roughly a size "50". Decorated over the front of the jersey with Chicago's famed Indigenous head team crest that features beautifully done chain-stitched embroidery throughout, matching tomahawk alternate logo patches have been added over both sleeves as well and once again show the same chain-stitched detailing. Having had Bulley's number "29" sewn to the sleeves and verso in dual layer black-over-red tackle twill numerals, "Bulley" is spelt out in single layer black twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Having had a garter style fight strap sewn into the interior through the bottom of the "2" on the reverse, the piece shows good game-wear via stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves while small board burns are present over both sleeves as well. Also showing some spot staining over the lower front and lower reverse, team repairs totaling no fewer than fourteen (14) by our count are observed throughout the entirety of the piece, heaviest over the front and left sleeve. With good pilling seen throughout the interior of the piece, it is also worthy of note that the 1980-81 set of these Coane manufactured jerseys typically has had name and/or number changes, sometimes being replaced with the same number that was just taken off then resewn on which is the case with this jersey as evidence of removal is seen on the reverse. Additionally, the Black Hawks may have recycled many of the 79-80 set for the 80-81 and 81-82 season as multiple Coane made jerseys of the same player in the same color have rarely emerged with this a possibility with this jersey as research shows that the tagging style in the neck is what was present on the 1979-80 set of shirts.
