Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
One of only three players chosen to represent Canada at both the 1972 Canada-Russia series and the 1974 Summit Series along with Frank Mahovlich and 1972 hero Paul Henderson, Pat Stapleton – who served as team captain in 1974 - experienced action against the Soviets in 7 of the 8 games in 1972, and had a +6 plus/minus total throughout the tournament – one of the best for Team Canada. Hailing from training camp prior to the tournament, where a trio of junior players practiced with Team Canada including John Van Boxmeer, Billy Harris and Michel Larocque, we have a team-signed stick issued to Stapleton that originates from his personal collection. A special Victoriaville Team Canada model stick produced specifically for the tournament with “Pat Stapleton” and “Special Model” stamped, both sides of the shaft have been shaved down, with approx 25 signing in mostly black marker, with a number of the signatures heavily faded. Signers include the aforementioned junior players John Van Boxmeer and Michel Larocque, along with Orr (did not play in any of the Canada-Russia Series games), Savard (faded), Mikita, White, Johnston, Cashman, Awrey (faded), Hull, P Esposito, Ellis, Berenson, Park (faded), Clarke (faded), Sinden (faded), Martin (faded), Seiling (faded), Henderson (faded) and a few others. Exhibiting light wear with the bottom striping accent gone, there appears to be tape residue over the knob, with the stick possibly used briefly. An LOA from the Stapleton family will accompany.
