Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
A rich part of hockey folklore despite only seeing 14 seasons of NHL action, the Montreal Maroons played from 1924 to 1938, with Stanley Cups won in both 1926 and 1935. The club would also boast a number of HOFers throughout their tenure, including Clint Benedict, Lionel Conacher, Nels Stewart and others. We have an especially rare collection of signed Maroons newsprint pictures totaling 10 from 1927-28, featuring HOFers Benedict, Siebert, Dutton, Smith and Nels Stewart, along with Ward, Phillips, Oatman, Munro and Flat Walsh. Each roughly 7” x 11” black and white image has been signed by the respective player in fountain pen, with the only issue the Benedict example that ends along the right border, with the “t” of “Benedict” just slightly cropped.
Each has a rough top edge with tearing, with some including the Smith, Walsh and Phillips examples having paper loss along the bottom sections. A few also exhibit fold lines. Despite the poor condition of the pictures themselves, most would display wonderfully matted and framed. We should also note that the Smith example has been signed just “Hooley”, with Munro adding “1928”.
