Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

First representing Canada internationally at the 1983 World Junior Tournament, Mario Lemieux has donned the sacred maple leaf on numerous occasions, winning gold at the Canada Cup, World Championships and Winter Olympics. Initially looking like "Super Mario" would once again wear Canada's red and white colours at the inaugural 1996 World Cup of Hockey, Lemieux pulled out of the tournament in August just before the start of pre-tournament contests, instead choosing to focus on the upcoming National Hockey League campaign, the last before his first retirement. Offered here, we present this Team Canada jersey that was issued for game-use by Lemieux during the tournament which was never worn. A Bauer made offering that features size "58" and "ProWear" labeling affixed to the inner collar, a Bauer logo patch is sewn over the right breast with the all-important 1996 World Cup of Hockey event patch having been added below that. Decorated over the front of the garment with a familiar Hockey Canada team crest that features embroidered details throughout, logos of matching style have been sublimated into the material of the jersey over both shoulders. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Lemieux's number "66" in dual layer white-over-black tackle twill numerals, "M. Lemieux" has been spelt out in single layer red twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Displaying a Nike Team Sports barcode heat pressed inside the reverse hem, the jersey remains in excellent condition with just a couple of small spot stains over the front and black marks over the numbers on the reverse.
