Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
An absolute threat to netminders on any ice surface, Marcel Dionne was the first recipient of back-to-back Eddie Powers Memorial Trophies as the OHA's leading scorer in both 1969-70 and 1970-71, with his 507 combined playoff and regular season OHA points a record upon his leaving the league. Hailing from the 1970-71 OHA campaign - a season that witnessed 55 playoff points along with a J. Ross Robertson Cup-victory – we have a signed St. Catharines Black Hawks jersey that was worn by the HOFer. Identical to the example from the Dionne Collection that crossed the Classic auction block in Oct 2004, no labeling remains along the collar, with the vintage durene measuring-out to roughly a size 52. Featuring a gorgeous multi-coloured Indian head team crest with chain-stitched detailing, “9” appears over the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with matching “D” tomahawk crests over each shoulder. A COA for the signature will accompany.
Recycled from the Dallas Black Hawks, the jersey exhibits the same font/type/placement of the numbers as the example sold in 2004. Our catalog imagery showing Marcel as captain during 1970-71 – the only season he wore the “C” – exhibits the same hemmed-up design, with the correct team crest placement and correct distance between the bottom of the crest and the first white stripe of the lower band. Furthermore, there is evidence of a former captain's "C" over the breast on the offered jersey, and its placement again matching the aforementioned photo. Surviving in beautiful condition with a bright and clean team crest, just a few marks/blemishes are visible over the front and reverse of the lower band, with a small hole over the left elbow. There are also team repairs over each sleeve and beneath the collar, with some loose threading within the left armpit. Dionne has signed over the right breast in black marker, with no issues for the signature.
