Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Perhaps the first portrayal of hockey on the Hollywood big screen, Idol of the Crowds, initially released late in the summer of 1937, starred a young John Wayne along with love interest Sheila Bromley. Convinced to leave his chicken farm for the Big Apple and the world of professional hockey, Wayne suits up for the New York Panthers to help lead the team to the championship, only to run afoul of crooked gamblers and the tempting siren associated with them. Issued for the film’s re-release in 1948, we have an especially attractive Idol of the Crowds movie poster. At approx. 14” x 36” and featuring enticing graphics, Wayne is depicted in full equipment ready for game action, with wonderful vignettes added from the film.
Toning and heavy edge wear seem to be the biggest concerns regarding condition, with three horizontal fold-lines present, along with pinholes at both the top and bottom sections. There are also a couple minor stains over the lower portion, with a few edge tears including a larger example near the middle right. The reverse has a few stains left from tape residue, along with a few handwritten notes.
